Commentary

Man United got the game against Villarreal underway, kicking from right to left.

Carrick has put a statement out there by dropping Bruno Fernandes to the bench and starting Donny van de Beek.

The first meaningful effort at goal was by Villarreal’s Moi Gómez, whose 5th minute shot forced a save out of David de Gea in the United goal.

The next chance came from some sloppy Man United defending in the 10th minute that allowed Pino to get a shot at goal. His effort hit the side netting.

12th minute – Pau Torres headed a cross from Pervis Estupiñán over the United goal from near the penalty spot. Manchester United goal kick.

22nd minute – Ronaldo lost his temper due to not being awarded a free-kick after clearly being pushed in the back.

27th minute – Villarreal broke down the United left before the ball was pulled back to the edge of the box where Manu Trigueros took a first time shot. Great save from David de Gea, diving to his right.

30th minute – Alex Telles played a delicious ball into the Villarreal box. His cross was met by the head of Ronaldo. His effort at goal was easily saved.

33rd minute – The first yellow card of the game was shown to Pino for a foul on Telles. Manchester United free-kick in a dangerous position.

41st minute – A yellow card was shown to Donny van de Beek for a late challenge. Villarreal free-kick in a good position.

43rd minute – Gómez Bardonado found space on the edge of the United box. His shot deflected wide. Villarreal corner.

Villarreal restarted the tie.

63rd minute – Danjuma had a chance to give the home side the lead. However, his shot went high over the bar from close range.

Cristiano Ronaldo punished some sloppy work by Rulli in the Villarreal goal. A poor pass out from the back led to Fred winning the ball for Man United. He played in Ronaldo who lifted the ball over the keeper and it nestled in the back of the net.

Fred broke up the player deep in his own half allowed United to counter attack. Ronaldo received the ball on the halfway line, he played in Marcus Rashford who then squared the ball to the on rushing Jadon Sancho who smashed the ball into the back of the net,
